Known locally as ‘capital of the Wolds’, Driffield sits pretty much in the middle of that area, at the centre of a little sunburst of roads to Bridlington, Skipsea, Beverley, Scarborough, York and Market Weighton. Until the 18th century Driffield had been a rural village, but the coming of the Driffield Navigation, a canal extending the River Hull to the settlement, changed its fortunes, and when in the 19th century the railway came the village was transformed into a thriving market town. The market is still held every Thursday and Saturday, and the traditional one-day agricultural show is still a highlight of the year, but the foot and mouth crisis closed the cattle market, and though the railway remains the canal has been for pleasure craft only since just after the end of WWII. With a population of 11,477 at the 2001 census, Driffield has plenty of amenities: its own schools including sixth form provision; a plethora of pubs; and a small high street for shopping and dining. Driffield is a pleasant market town, the tower of its elegant old All Saints’ church standing high about the earthly concerns beneath it, and it makes a good base for exploring the lovely but relatively little known Wolds district. Beyond it lies the East Yorkshire coast with the twin draws of Bridlington and Flamborough just a short drive away. Closer to home and roughly equidistant from Driffield there are two very impressive stately homes, Burton Agnes to the north east, and Sledmere house to the north west.
