Be very careful when talking to residents of Dore not to refer to it as “Just a suburb of Sheffield.” True, it is today part of that city, and a wealthy part too with the likes of Chris Waddle, Michael Vaughn and Dave Bassett making their homes there. But there is much more to the place and its history than a mere appurtenance of the Steel City. Dore was in its time a vital border settlement, marking for one thing the dividing line between the sees of Canterbury and York. And it was too on the border between the kingdoms of Mercia and Northumbria. In 829, with Northumbria weakened by the scourge of the Vikings, the recent conqueror of Mercia King Ecgbert of Wessex was promised fealty by the northern kingdom at Dore. This means that the little village of Dore saw the creation of the English kingdom, Ecgbert being the first king of all England. It did not last beyond Ecgbert’s death in 839, but the potential unit of the smaller kingdoms was certainly established at Dore, and is worthy of its memorial there in the shield-shaped granite plaque on the village green. Dore was also on the border of Derbyshire and Yorkshire until it became part of Sheffield in 1934. As its history of lead working and steel making is so closely linked to Sheffield’s – Benjamin Huntsman was the first to make crucible steel just outside the village in Abbeydale Hamlet, now a grade 1 listed site. The Peak District is a stone’s throw away, some of the most beautiful countryside in England, and another factor that seems somehow to put a little distance between Dore and Sheffield. As that city has developed out of all recognition in recent years, however, the genteel suburb of Dore can boast that it has the best of both worlds, with the Peak Park one way and one of England’s most thriving and carefully re-developed cities the other.
