Ashfield

Ashfield for a Change

Ashfield where Sherwood Forest meets the Peak District , features some of the most beautiful, undulating countryside in the East Midlands including the two highest peaks in Nottinghamshire , each offering spectacular views.

Way-marked footpaths criss-cross the countryside, including the mysterious 'Hidden Valleys' trails, which take you through the countryside that offered inspiration to both Lord Byron and D H Lawrence . The Teversal Trails network offers walks ranging from one mile to 15 miles.

Each of our Country Parks, Portland in Kirkby, Brierley and Kings Mill in Sutton and Teversal, offer outstanding areas of beauty along with access for the disabled as well as limited access for both cyclists and horse riders. The national Sustrans cycle network skirts the edge of the district and offers several connections to our own cycle routes. Each of the Country Parks possess their own visitor centre with light snacks and displays and are well sign posted with the brown tourist signs.

The town of Hucknall boasts an outstandingly ornate parish church , which includes England's largest collection of stained class windows by the artist C. E. Kempe. Buried within the church itself is probably the most charismatic poet of all time - Lord Byron. Buried along side him is his daughter Ada Lovelace, who is renowned as being the world's first computer programmer. In the church yard is buried Ben Caunt, the prize fighter and English boxing champion, after who the famous 'Big Ben' bell in Westminster is named.

While Sutton-in-Ashfield boasts one of Europe's largest sundial the whole District offers a continual round of events, which appeal to all ages and interests. Teversal offers a five star caravan park and ornate gardens within the grounds of Teversal Manor - The fictional home of Lady Chatterley, while the medieval Felley Priory also hosts a magnificent garden. The romantic ruins of Annesley church lay next to the ruins of Annesley Hall.
