Life changed for Amy Williams with her Gold Medal win in the skeleton bob event at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. She had already shown talent and courage in taking silver at the 2009 Lake Placid World Championships, where she was physically not at her best, suffering from a virus, but perhaps because of her self-effacing nature the gold medal in Canada seemed to surprise both her and the entire British team.
Amy was born in Cambridge on September 29 1982, but was brought up in Bath where her father is a senior figure in the chemistry department at Bath University, the place where she chose to study – originally an arts course, then Sports Performance. Though she was a county standard 400m runner she did not have the speed to progress further, changing to the skeleton bob discipline after a trial run at a dry track in her home town.
Known to fellow British athletes as Curly-Wurly because of her frizzy hair, she has a touch of the eccentric about her – talking to her favourite sled named Arthur and patting it after every run – that endeared her to journalists and spectators at the games, as did her total lack of arrogance and hyperbole after taking gold.
