Born 1811. Died 1883 - Scottish industrialist.


Lifelong friend of David Livingstone, helped finance second and third expeditions. Set up small oil refinery at Alfreton in 1848. Later began manufacture of naphtha and lubrication oils. Produced paraffin oil and solid paraffin at plant at Bathgate. Appointed president of Andersonís College in 1868. Elected to Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1873.
