Born 1834. Died 1921 - Scottish architect and military engineer.


He graduated at Trinity College, Dublin, and in 1863 was called to the Irish Bar, and in 1877 he was appointed Irish Agent at the Home Office. But he is best known for his role as Assistant Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police and Chief of the CID at Scotland Yard when London was in the grip of the ‘Jack the Ripper’ scare. Published works include Criminals and Crime (1907), and The Lighter Side of My Official Life (1910).
