Madge Kendal was the eventual stage name of Margaret Shafto Robertson, who after marriage to the actor William Hunter Grimston adopted his stage surname of Kendal. She was a leading light of the late Victorian and Edwardian stage, made a Dame in 1926 for her services to that profession, where she excelled in both the great women’s roles in Shakespeare and comedies by writers like Pinero and Stephenson. After retiring from the stage she became president of the actor’s retirement home Denville Hall.
