After service with the King’s Own Regiment, including the Battle of Waterloo, Lonsdale returned to his native Bath. He collected fossils, becoming an expert particularly in fossilized corals. Lonsdale worked for several years as curator to The Geological Society of London. His studies and publications helped other geologists to establish the existence of the Devonian period between the Paleozoic and Carboniferous.
