Edward Neale
- Favourite Briton.

Born in Bath, Bath
Born on 2nd of April 1810
Died on 16th of September 1892

Born in Bath in 1810, the son of a Church of England vicar, Edward Neale was educated at Oxford, Cardinal Newman among his mentors. After qualifying for the bar in 1837 Neale became a Christian Socialist, an energetic supporter of working men’s educational schemes and particularly of the cooperative movement. For the latter cause he wrote pamphlets, founded the first London cooperative shop, served as a director of its insurance arm, and worked to establish a forerunner of the Cooperative Wholesale Society (at great financial cost to himself). A memorial to him can be seen in St Paul’s Cathedral.
