Raikes was a significant figure in the development of education in this country, establishing the first Sunday School and helping the growth of what became a national movement. The spread of the idea was helped by his proprietorship of The Gloucester Journal newspaper. He faced much opposition from various quarters, but the concept took root, and informed subsequent educational reforms in this country.
