Made London debut in A Scent of Flowers (1964). Co-founded Actors Company (1972). Performed many plays for Royal Shakespeare Company and Royal National Theatre. Films roles included Scandal (1989), Richard III (1996), Gods and Monsters (1998) and Lord of the Rings triology). Active campaigner for gay rights.
