Born 1906. Died 1994 - Scottish novelist and critic.

Pseudonym Michael Innes. Educated at Oriel College, Oxford. Best known for his Pattullo sequence, set in Oxford academia. Novels include A Use of Riches (1957) and The Last Tresilians (1963). Wrote thrillers as Michael Innes including Lament for a Maker (1938) and The Journeying Boy (1949). Wrote works on Rudyard Kipling, Thomas Hardy, James Joyce and Joseph Conrad under his own name.
