Born 1909. Died 2000 - Scottish novelist and historian.

Trained as accountant before turning to writing in 1936. Best known novels have an historical theme including the trilogy on the life of Robert the Bruce. Non-fiction work includes studies on Scottish castles and fortified houses. Nigel Tranterís Scotland (1981) gives an account of rural Scotland.
