Bad Points: temperature of room (too warm) - noisy (room directly over boiler room!) old shabby decor, dirty carpets, dirty glasses in Bar - (had to ask for clean glass as gin & tonic was served in glass with lipstick all around rim!

The good: 1) Breakfast was alright. The bad: 1) Had bad booking issues; 2) Gave me a dirty, messy room; 3) Some lights didn't work in the bedroom; 4) Only 4 TV channels available; 5) Phones were down several times, so I couldn't call nor receive calls (during my *business* trip); 6) Very, very noisy fan in the toilet; 7) I came back one afternoon and my bedroom door was open (cleaning staff just forgot to close it); 8) I had to wait up to ten minutes, several times, for hot water to take a shower; 9) Dreadful, dreadful mattress; 10) Part of the staff was most unfriendly.

HI, I booked a holiday for my mum & her sister for them to stay in the Poratland Hotel as they were going to a surprise Birthday Party & Hagley Rd was very near the area. Firstly I was told that the rooms were lovely etc .. but the service was TERRIBLE.. They got no welcome what so ever, a daughter of the family, who's party they were attending had left a Important message about the party etc & they were NOT given it. When they queried this with the Staff the manager said yes we received it & I passed it to eh girl in Reception who had told them previous that she didnt rececive it, she just turned aroudn and oh yeah I forgot and walked away. Was not corrected at all by the manager. Breakfast - the lady serving did not once make eye contact with them, they stayed for 4 days ... On departure no one looked said goodbye, enjoy your stay or nothing so my Aunty had to go back in & just say were leaving now the lady looked up & said yes, my aunt said you know hte way your advertise your friendly staff etc well we got none of it, She just looked up and sarcastically said oh sorry ... I tell you never ever AGAIN will they or anyone we know be staying there !! :-(

Good Points: Cheep and cheerful Bad Points: Bar was hardly ever open General Review: We stayed in the Portland for two nights when in Birmingham for Miss Saigon. The hotel was exactly what we needed. A cheap and cheerful place to stay. Nice and quiet and no hassle at all. The only thing that wasn't to my liking was the hotel bar was always shut, but that wasn't really a problem as there is a shop just up the road to buy some booze and have a laugh in your room if you didn't want to go to a pub (And seeing as Birmingham City had been relegated that weekend, I didn't particularly want to go to a pub as the football supporters were drowning their sorrows!!). Overall, a nice, cheap, clean place to rest our heads.
