Just to let everybody know that The Dark Horse, Stowlangtoft has been refurbished and a heart beat put back in to it. We have taken 5 months to carry out these works since buying the restaurant and re-opened on 7th March 2014. We just had to buy it!! what a great location, just needed a bit of TLC Hope to see you all soon telephone number has changed to 01359 230904 but all calls are re-directed from old number.

My Husband and I stumbled across the Dark Horse whilst looking for a village pub for lunch . What a delight ! the building was amazing A stable block with original features restored and refurbished brilliantly. We had a lovely welcome from a young lady for whom nothing was too much trouble . My husband is in a wheelchair and she went out of her way to seat him where he was comfortable. Unfortuneately the chefs were having trouble with suppliers who were late and the food was limited . We decided to stay for a drink and a very informative chat . (took lots of photos). The supplies arrived and we had a very good well cooked meal. The owner arrived and apologised to us about the delay and was very pleasant and thanked us for our patience. On leaving later he came out of his home to say goodbye to us. Yes it is a wonderful place and we recommend it totally.

In reply to the Turner's comments. We are a small operator only open two nights a week with a limited menu. All choices are freshly prepared. The number of portions of sausages available that night was limited as a lot had been sold to other tables. I am pleased they enjoyed the fish, the crumble and the almond and chocolate sponge. The casserole again is freshly made and the game is purchased from local suppliers and usually gets excellent comments. - sorry we missed the cranberries on one portion but no mention of this was made when we checked if everthing was well during the meal. The vegetables consisted of carrots, peppers, courgettes, broccolli and new potatoes all included in the main course price. As all of the main courses were included in the offer for 1/2 price I feel these comments are somewhat harsh. By way of recompense I would like to offer the Turners a bottle of house wine with my compliments on their next visit. Andrew Donovan

We enjoyed an excellent meal at the Dark Horse last night. The unique surroundings added to the experience. The menu isn't large but there's something for all tastes, freshly cooked and using local ingredients. The portions were generous, the house red and house white were both very good and coffee in the "stable" gave a nice finish to our evening. The price was reasonable and overall I'd rate it 8/10.

Very disappointed with quality of food overall. The Salmon dish was OK. Sausages were Ok but only enough for two people which seems a bit odd. The venison and chicken casserole was tasteless and had no gravy and one portion looked like the scrapings off the bottom, two had cranberries on and one didn't. Vegetables were nothing special. The crumble was tasty but the custard tasted like instant and made with hot water. The chocolate cake and meringues were good. Despite having two main meals for 1 offer it was not worth the money I'm afraid. 2/10

Just read the review for the Dark horse Restaurant Stowlangtoft Bury St Edmunds Suffolk by "Lucy" I feel this review should be removed as having looked back at the menu we did not have "turkey stew" on the menu that night the poultry dish was free range chicken breast stuffed with wild mushrooms and accompanied by a red wine and Marsala sauce. The mash would have been served with local award winning sausages braised in cider with apples and onions but having checked with other customers that night that dish was as good as always. Maybe Lucy had a sour taste in her mouth

My mash potato was sour, the thai curry was the most watery tasteless turkey stew. Overall, not worth your time or money visiting.
