Arriving at 1830 on a Sunday night...two tables occupied. No other tables reserved. We sat at a table for 4 near the fire......and were requested to move, not too politely, by a young lady who firstly asked if we had a reservation, then said that the table we were sitting at might be needed for any party of four that might wander in! I tried to reason with her that the Pub wasn't busy but her attitude was that if we didn't want to sit at one of the tables for 2, in an adjacent pokey little room, then we would not be welcome. We left, and will never return.

This was our fifth visit over the last few months and the food and ale just continues to get better! The staff seem well clued up on the menu and wines etc and the atmosphere is always welcoming with chatty locals at the bar. I had the Fillet steak tower which was fantastic and my wife had the Vegetable wellington which was also delicious. We were also there on a very busy valentines weekend (like the other reviewer) and had a wonderful time, I can only assume they were at a different Shepherds inn! Oh well. We're definately going back again and again!

The SHepherds is a beautifully clean pub offering a wide range of ales, but that is where it stops. we ate here for the first time last night and the food was appalling. The steak so tough for a medium rare I could harldy cut through it, the potatos were not mashed well at all and the veg bland. Another member of my party had the mixed grill, he got half of brought out then the other half arrived ten minutes later. Apple pie and cream consists of tinned cream carnation style and the table service was shocking. Not even half full on what should of been a packed valentines weekend, what does this tell you. Lovely pub but the food is a terrible letdown, they need to sack the chef and get in some waiting staff that have a modicum of idea as to what they are doing. Such a shame.

The Shepherds Inn had been recommended in the literature we found at our holiday cottage and six of us visited and were extremely disappointed. The young man who attended to us was very helpful and could not have been more poliite but the standard of food was appalling. My own order of butter bean soup and then yorkshire pudding with cumberland sausage was awful, the soup lacked any taste whatsoever and the sausages had been baked to a point where they were so hard they were inedible and the rest of the party were just as dis-satisfied. A huge let down after we had some wonderful meals at other etablishments over the weekend, namely the Fox at Ousby and the Herdwick Inn at Penruddock. We did not complain to the landlord as we really did not want to cause a fuss in front of his friends in the bar.
