Best rates for a Local Hotel

Visited early in the day and found it charming, atmospheric and quiet. Very pleasant and a fine conversation with a bar man that knew his whiskies.... was surprised to read the above reviews but then remembered a young member of staff who had come down from the hotel dressed as a penguin and as frosty as an antarctic day...... perhaps once you have waited on the rich and famous it is a come down to deal with the anonymous rabble.....

We have been going to Bigbury beach and visiting the Pilchard Inn for a few years. They used to be welcoming and people were allowed to use the bar, you would think naturally enough. However, in the last 2 or so years things have changed. The staff are sullen and will not even let non-residents of the hotel into the bar of the inn to order drinks. You have to queue up outside the 'family room' - size of a small kitchen - in order for the staff to deign to take your order. When we were there were 2 hotel guests being served at the bar and about 30 people queued up outside the plebs entrance. Needless to say we did not order drinks and will never bother to go there again. AN EMBARRASSMENT FOR DEVON.

A fantastic location and hugely entertaining as you'll find this the most understaffed and rudest pub in the area. This is the second and very last time I'll take visting guests there. The second time was even worse than the first. We waited for 30 mins to be served a gone off pint (Pilchards own!), substandard crab sandwich and warm coke. Another customer complained that the crisps were out-of-date and was ignored, a family were bawled at for going in the wrong bar. No refunds or apologies in this hole. Glasses and plates all over the place and no attempt to clear them up. They have a captive market and know it and don't give a dam whether you return or not. Really, they don't deserve your custom.

This used to be a delightful, friendly public house, sadly, in the last couple of years it has become a hostile and very unfriendly....unless of course, you are staying at the Hotel on the Island. My advice...don't bother going...oh,and you have to return the glasses to the bar as the staff are too lazy to collect them.....Plenty of nice pubs in the area, stick to them.
