Saturday night was our first time visiting the Five Bells for nearly two years. My gosh, it is much improved welcoming, attentive staff with an imaginative menu. I had the moules which were fantastic and obviously fresh that day (a rarety these days), my wife had the baked salmon which was just as good. This pub, I was told, has been recently taken over and with the improvements I have seen and the fabulous location this pub is a new Must-Visit I would recommend to anyone.

Today was the second time I've visited this pub for a lunchstop during a day walk. A friend recommended it as an Egon ronay type eaterie.
Although the location and beer garden are lovely, for the second time in two years I have felt that there is something not quite welcoming about the atmosphere. It feels distinctly like a locals pub with a cliquey atmosphere and sort of cut the air with a knife feel. The staff are lovely and friendly with great service but I got the feeling that the locals don't really want any strangers there.
On top of that the food was not as good as I expected either. The menu was limited to choices I didn't really fancy. In the end I went for the safe option of cod and chips but had to leave half the fish as it was watery inside. The treacle tart was yummy though. A friend ordered the chips and noticed that her portion was far smaller than others she had seen. It did look rather small to me too. Other friends who had the roasts enjoyed their meals far more. So I guess if you eat at this pub go for that.
So basically while the pub has a great location and looks lovely, the atmosphere is odd and the food could do with improvement. Maybe it was the chef's day off. Both times I've been here there haven't been many people so perhaps others have been put off for the same reasons. Pity because this pub has so much potential and probably very good beer.
