we booked a table last night for 10 of us, we pre-ordered the meal as we all had something different. I t was a celebration, and we had a fabulous meal, we didn't have to wait long, and it was served by lovely friendly staff who could take a joke. The beer and wine were very good, and we would certainly return. The ambience of the pub was great and as it was winter, of course the fires were all burning, which added to the general feeling of well-being. The food was on the expensive side, but I felt our meals were well presented and tasted fabulous. The pub may not be geared for kids too much, but there are plenty of places that are:- eg McDonalds or Frank and Benneys!(personally, I don't think that children should be able to go everywhere, anyway and I have three of my own).

With picturesque river views over Moody's Marina in Lower Swanwick, The Jolly Sailor, made famous by, for those who can remember, Howards Way, offers one of the finest settings in Southampton. Combine that with fine ales and an excellent selection of quality wines, the scene is set for a wonderful dining experience, whether it be a traditional pub lunch or an evening dinner. Visitors beware though, my choice of “Glory Battered Fish and Hand Cut Chips with Mushy Peas” was bitterly disappointing. How hard can it be? Firstly, it took 55 minutes from placing the order to receiving the dish, if that wasn’t annoying enough, the so called hand cut chips were no more than poor quality bargain basement oven baked chips, someone forgot to “mush” the peas, as what came were more bargain basement low quality frozen produce. And of course the fish, oh my god, I don’t know who made the batter, but I’ve seen better in the bin outside of my local Kebab shop on a Friday night. I dare not even describe the so called Caesar Salad in fear of insulting the Roman Empire itself. My wife and I ordered fish and chips, a seafood pie and Caesar Salad, coffee and a lime and soda, for a grand total of £44. Overall, an incredibly disappointing experience delivering poor service and incredibly poor value for money. Recommendation – Change Your Chef Tony

Looked like a nice pub, good food, nice views, but don't bother if you have children. We arrived at 7.15 & ordered a meal. Very busy so had to wait an hour for our food. When we then tried to order a dessert, we were told they wouldn't take the order as we had children under 14 and had to leave by 9.00. They didn't have a notice to this effect and nothing to warn us when we arrived. Just refused service and told to leave by 9.00. Two very upset children, no dessert & made to feel very unwelcome. There were still children eating main meals when we left, would they be made to stop eating & leave I wonder!! If they wish to have this rule should it not be clearly displayed, the barmaids all said they had never seen a notice. Oh by the way, dogs are very welcome!!
