Lovely quiet atmosphere as usual, but the prices approach that of a restaurant in the City. Well north of £30 for 2x fish & chips, a bottle of water and a half of bitter. So much for a quick lunch, except it wasn't quick due to slow service. Why fish & chips? Well, these pubs all seem to have the same "gastro" menu these days, and this was the least pretentious (and in the lower price bracket). Was it good? Afraid only very average, with a totally over-salted tartar sauce. In summary, I won't detour there again, the lovely architecture of the building carries the place only so far.

My wife and I have just spent a most enjoyable evening at The Plough, which is a pub full of character and atmosphere set in a good rural location but only a few miles drive from central Winchester. The pub has an outstanding menu with some truly mouth watering choices and we enjoyed all three courses which were cooked to our liking, beautifully presented and delicious to eat. The pub caters for the real ale fan and has a good range, although on this occasion I had a very pleasant bottle of Chilean Merlot, served at the correct temperature. Would I recommend this pub? I most certainly would and I have booked a return visit for next week. It is a true delight in an area sadly lacking in quality hostelries.

A party of 8 of us visited THE PLOUGH INN for a Fathers Day lunch. It was of course busy on Fathers Day, but the staff were very attentive and the service was good, the food was well presented and good quality. A little strange, but there was a need to go to the bar to order another bottle of wine, which felt a "little strange". It is almost like THE PLOUGH is unsure what it is, a gastro pub or a restaurant. The prices are definately positioned closer to the restaraunt end of the spectrum. Nice garden for kids.

My daughter, Paula Fahy, reserved a table for 10 to celebrate my 70th birthday. Two of her guests ordered fish and chips. It was clear that the fish had been rapidly unfrozen; it was wet, mushy and tasteless. The two guests were extremely disppointed. Had I booked the table for an ordinary visit, I would have complained, but in my position as principal guest, I obviouly could not. On the previous Saturday, I arranged a dinner for 40 colleagues at The Boot, Houghton. The meal was far superior to what we were served at the Plough. I have waited three weeks to make this complaint because I have been abroad on business. I live close to Sparsholt. Guess where we are going to eat in future.
