Stopped by in the evening for a quick bite after driving all day. Two steak and kidney pies, great food, great pastry. and real chips! nice open fire and the crackling of wood... mmm! reluctantly about to set off when twenty or so musicians came in to set up some kind of jam in the room by the bar. apparently they play there every week. we decided to stay a bit longer. nice ale, very friendly owners. just what me and my husband needed after driving for four hours on a hectic motorway! will definitely be back!

Visited to see good friend play in back room. Intended to dine in restaurant first at 8pm. First two choices on menu (fish and chips and chess and onion pie) had run out. Waitress had to check whether steaks were on. When we ordered was not asked how we wanted it cooked. Steak stringy and no steak knives. Boiled veg and chips in centre of table to share. Ordered two pints and barrel ran out. We asked them to bring over - they forgot. My wife had the worst glass of red wine we had tasted in 40 years. Dopey staff with no customer service skills. Below parr food. Pervading smell of bad drains. How does this place stay in business? (great gig though)

Came in on a dank cold misty afternoon and was delighted to find a lovely warm fire, and a friendly barmaid. Ordered Tomato soup - piping hot, and delicious. Also had garlic bread with cheese - simple stuff, but served really quickly, and hit the spot to revive spirit and body! Nice atmosphere, quiet music, warm warm fire! Fabulous - will come back for a proper meal sometime soon!
