Good Points: good room and facilities clean and well situated polite and friendly hotel staff Bad Points: restaraunt staff could do with some retraining unhappy that our milk jug was taken from a recently vacated table and a member of staff was seen by us emptying milk from vacated tables into a jug to be reused they were also quite unfriendly and not very helpful although in their defence they were very busy General review: overall our stay was good

Good Points: Location was convenient, staff on the reception were helpful & friendly & overall it was reasonably good value for money Bad Points: Given that the hotel has been refurbished & its star rating I expected a higher standard of decor and modernity. Reception is cluttered & corridors are drab & uninviting (almost cell like)& rooms need decorating & room furniture needs modernising (covered chairs were grimey). Staff at restaurant & at breakfast weren't well mannered or attentive. General review: Reasonable value for money but dissapointing overall.

Recently had a meal in the new Old Poste House Bar and Grill - the hotel's restaurant that opened in March 06. Booked a table, but on arrival realised didn't need to as the place was empty. Originally went for the 2 for £30 special, but nothing on it that we liked, so ordered from the main menu. Ordered Soup, which came with olive ciabatta bread, warmed in a wine cooler..and sirloin steak well done, with lattice potatoes with a whole tomatoe and mushrooms. Steak arrived well well done, that tasted like ash, broken up into 4 small medallion like pieces, no latticed pots as the waiter informed us that they had received "bad feedback" and so stopped serving them - the only alternative was a spoonful of baby new pots, and winter vegetables (even though this meal was a grill). When mentioned the state of the steak informed that due to wanting it well done, the chef had to butterfly it so that it cooked properly..We thought we'd be safe with the dessert menu, and ordered mini cheesecakes and pancakes with black cherries and cream. However, received one pancake with cream and smothered in Summer Fruits - not a black cherry in sight! Cheesecakes were 4 bite size presented on a giant plate... In all, a very disappointing meal..left feeling still hungry at a cost of £44.10 for 2 people! Wouldn't recommend the place unless they altered the menu to more traditional meals that people would enjoy - too many fish dishes and no vegetarian options on the menu at all unless especially requested.. Having eaten at a number of restaurants with no complaints, I think the chefs should give people what it says on the menu, or at least inform people when they are ordering, if it's changed.

We stayed at this hotel on the 29th July 2006 as part of a coach party. We thought when we arrived at the hotel that we would need to wear hard hats and work boots as the hotel is currently undergoing re-furbishment and from the outside, it looked like a building site. What a suprise when we got inside. All the hotel staff were exceptionally helpful and friendly. The rooms were immaculate, spacious and comfortable. The food was excellant especially the breakfast. I rate this hotel as one of the best hotels that we have stayed at on a National Holidays tour. Well done to the management and staff of the Sporting Lodge and thank you for a very pleasant enjoyable weekend.

I would not recomend this hotel. The rooms are old fashioned there were stains on the carpet, no air conditioning and the bed was so uncomfortable that my back ached the next mornings - sleeping on the floor would have been better it but it was hard to avoid the stains. will not be satying here again!
