Good Points: Very friendly, welcoming staff. Excellent breakfast. Rooms good with tea/coffee available. Additional nice touches e.g. chocolate in room! General review: The visit was to see family not seen for a while - the hotel experience added to the family feel.

Warm & comfortable; good bed; excellent breakfast; non-smoking rooms; tea & coffee facilities,Poor directions; Overcrowded room; wardrobe jammed; very low shower water pressure; smoky public areas,"THe Gables is actually around 10 miles E of Durham, through Gilesgate - therefore handy for the coast. To get there from the south it is best to come off on the A1 junction before the main Durham city exit; or approach via the A19. The downstairs of the hotel is effectively a pub. You get a room key which also opens the front door. Staff friendly but rooms small with too much furniture. Has a guest house feel. Excellent home-cooked breakfast."
