Reviews of Hare & Hounds, Crowton

Best rates for a Local Hotel

We visit this pub almost every weekend and partake of the lunch menu. Invariably, the fresh, home-made soup is superb, the lasagne beautiful, and the Sunday Lunch menu is outstanding value for money. Pam, the Landlady, is one of the most amazing hosts you could ever hope to meet - always a chat for everyone, lots of news to share, stories to relate, and frequently checks on you to make sure all is OK. The girls and lads who wait on are young, happy and courteous, no matter what your needs. The decor is gimcrack and olde worldy - it's so cosy, warm and inviting. We utterly love it here and my own complaint is that I do not live in the village and therefore cannot call it my 'local'. If you are disappointed by a visit to the Hare & Hounds, then I don't ever think anything will satisfy you!

This is certainly the best pub in the area. They have a good variety of beers and the specials board at lunch time is really good. If you are just looking for a snack at lunchtime his soup is amazing, the sundried tomato must be tried. Lots of fish to try and the liver and onions is amazing. Make sure you finish everything or the landlady will tell you off!!

We regularly dine here and we were not disappointed this time. We started with soup and pate (both homemade, both excellent) before moving onto rack of lamb and swordfish. The mains were beautifully presented, the rack tender, really tasty and more than I could eat and the swordfish apparently perfectly cooked and deliciously seasoned with fresh garlic, chilli and tomato. We didn't have room for sweets but the choice was certainly tempting. If you haven't been, it's definitely worth a try, the service and welcome is fantastic and it really is a proper restaurant, not just a pub dining room, but at very reasonable prices!

i ve been passing this pub for sometime and i have wondered what the food is like and the atmosphere. so one day my friend and i popped in for a quick drink after been on the yard, just to see what it is like. the guy behind the bar was nice and friendly and chatty but there was a man behind the bar too which i think was the landlord, i didnt see him smile once and wasnt very welcoming. my friend and i just felt like he didnt want us to be there, and after talking to other people on the yard, it sounds like the landlords always like that, also that night someones car got broken into!

Having never been to the Hare&Hounds pub/restaurant we thought that we would try it seeing as it had been recommended by somebody we knew. Upon arriving for our meal at 8o'clock I was quite surprised that there was only one couple in the restaurant especially with it being Friday evening and quite a pleasant and warm Summer evening. OK there could be a number of reasons why the restaurant wasn't busy, but it does alarm me a little when a recommended restaurant was empty on a Friday night. We ordered a prawn in filo pastry starter which was OK. Main meals were Rack of lamb with a red currant jelly sauce and Chicken with Orange and Mango. The Rack of Lamb was Fine, the Chicken was absolutely tasteless, the veg consisting of carrots and cauliflower with cheese sauce also lacked any flavour, the chips were of a very poor quality and on a par with the worst of any pub chip I have tasted. The one sweet of Banoffee pie was fine. When the staff ask how our meal was,I think to myself, what is the point of telling them , we all know it's a complete wast of time. We were not after a free coffee or any money back any way, If they are happy serving some of the food we ate to-night then we are not impressed and will not be going back to the H&H for a long, long time. Definitely would not recommend the Hare & Hounds to anybody I will say that the staff were very pleasant and the food was hot when served, but the restaurant lacked any atmosphere because it was almost empty for the time we were there. I wonder why

I have worked at the Hare and Hounds for 7 years as a waitess and barmaid and would like to add a note that we do not serve meat and potatoe pie or braised steak in the evenings, nor have we ever done, so please can you just check that you have written about the correct establishment, thank you .

Did Andy (previous review) go to the same place as we did? - I doubt it I rang a few days before to book a table - the staff were helpful and friendly. On arrival the convivial welcome continued The food was EXCELLENT - I had lamb kidneys followed by sea bass with prawns and crayfish sauce - delicious and my partner had garlic mushrooms followed by duck. I am told this was equally delicious. Our only regret was that we were unable to eat all the vegatables which were plentiful and complemented the meal. The sweets were on a par with the meal. Certainly a treat not to be missed

first i asked if i could book a table for friday 11 january at 7pm but they said they were fully booked, so me and my wife just went for some drinks. when i walked in it was dead, there was only a handle of customers who were eating, so i ask the barman and he said looked at the diary and there was nothing book, so that means they lied to me and made them sound busy. my wife orderd a homemade meat n potatoe pie, which was cold in the middle and didnt look or taste homemade and i had braised steak which was just about eat able! the service was slow! me and my wife eat at different pubs around the area and the best food we have had yet is at the tigers head and the hazel pear inn.
