Taking a break on our way through to Salisbury from Seaton, we dropped in on the Foresters for the first time. I'm glad we did, as we had super meals (the fish was to die for) all in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Thanks.

A beautiful village with fond memories; however the same cannot be said for the owners of this establishment now. Gone are the days of the friendly local pub in the village. This is now unfriendly, pretentious, overpriced, poor quality food, not child friendly, rude owners and to cap it all you can have the owners very large and old labrador at the side of your dining table drooling and sniffing at your plate; very hygienic. Not to be visited again and would advice others to think twice.Resturants,Food and dogs do not mix

This is NOT a pub!! It is a very expensive bistro. I reckon £12 for fish & chips ia a bit much. My good lady ordered monkfish (£14.95) and was very disappointed at the portion, plus no accompanying veg. I had a steak which was small and thin, and gristly. I don't expect to walk out hungry, which is what we both did. Only place in the village, so a captive audience. Poor!!!

Surprisingly, it being Sunday lunch on Fathers'Day when "efforts had been made" to dress for the Big Day, we were greeted by a large scruffy-looking man(shirt hanging out, but old enough to look silly doing this!). But then, why not make the effort to dress for your paying guests every day? Despite not having booked - a telephone number on the web would have been handy! - a charming lady (co-owner?) found us a table and generally made a fuss of us! The meal was on a par with normal pub food, slightly soggy roast potatoes, thin slices of meat, and thinner gravy, but with miniscule vegetables in tiny dishes. Pubs serving small portions usually pile-on the vegetables! The general ambience was very friendly, and welcoming, but prices are relatively high for the quality and, particularly, quantity of food served: nearly £6 for a creme-brule is going rather too far! Location is just as one would wish for an English pub:deep in the Dorset countryside; and although the pub was quite full - inside and out - it seemed that many customers were there for a pleasant drink, rather than a meal.

The Foresters at Donhead is an excellent pub with really nice and original food. The beer is well-kept and the wine list is good and without too much of a mark-up. BUT: THERE IS NO RAILWAY STATION IN SHAFTESBURY!! In the review of the Foresters it states that the nearest station is Shaftesbury
