Don't recognise the comments of the previous review as being the same place we went. Perhaps he was expecting cordon blue for pub prices Good pub food, good value, hence we have been back and will go again. If you wish to go friday or saturday evening it is advisable to book.

This pub is clearly popular locally, maybe because portions are generous. The advertised open fire is now a closed stove though. However, we were mostly disappointed at the standard of cooking and service (tho the staff were friendly they lacked supervision and expertise). As a country pub it would be so much better if they kept it more simple and within range of the kitchen. I suspect the problem lies with trying to offer too many choices - as well as the laminated menu, there was a long blackboard of specials. These seemed to have been prepared in advance, and the vegetables kept warm or reheated, green had turned to grey. The puddings were another example of trying to do too much - a table blackboard had about 12 choices, but evidently some of these had lingered for a long time. Two tables were served with "strawberries and raspberries shortbread stack with cream". This was SO disappointing - 3 left over shortbread hearts from Valentines Day (stale too), on the plate 1 ontop of another, with ONE strawberry cut into 4, and a dab of pink sauce on the plate. This wasnt a stack as I know it and leaves people with a bad impression. Maybe having Chrismas pudd on the menu on 23 Feb is another example of using up old stock?
