It was my husband's birthday, and a rather special one at that so we decided to visit the Half Moon Pub, along with my son. As it was lunchtime, we wanted something light so we opted for the burger. It was delicious. Succulent, well seasoned fresh. It tasted even better than we make at home and that's saying something. We were so full we couldn't find any room for the delicious looking deserts beckoning us on the board. We decided we'd have to visit again and may be just have a desert! The staff were delightful; attentive but not a nuisance and made us feel really welcome. Thank you for helping to make my husband's birthday a very happy one.

We have just had a meal that was essentially an overpriced childrens sized portion. £10.95 almost £11 for a shallow saucer of cottage pie and a few hard veg on the plate. The same price for a small almost empty chicken and leek pie. To follow boozy eton mess. Where was the booze? one chopped strawberry tiny amount of meringue, all just cream. We went home and had some snacks to fill us up. We will not be coming back to this once good food pub.

we have lived in this area for only three years but quickly found the Half Moon,we eat there on a semi regular basis but have found the food to be consisitently excellent, have tried all of the offerings from their menu and have truely never had a bad experience. The staff are extremey welcoming and you do feel like are an old friend when you enter. The atmosphere is one of old charm and warmth, winter evenings are made all the better by the roaring fire, summer never passes without a few festivals. We have eaten extensively all over the world but on our return we always make our way back. A well deserved thank you.

This review is actually a response to the comments written by the previous guest - and is written by the owners of the Half Moon - Angela and Paul Acton. Firstly, we are bitterly disappointed that the customer did not enjoy his experience or food at our pub... we pride ourselves on the volume of recommendations that we receive and judge our success on this basis. Its so rare for us to receive complaints that we clearly remember this customer's visit. Our duck rolls are one of our most frequently ordered dishes and very popular. We do understand though that, as with seasoned steaks, taste is very individual and there will be times when a dish or flavours that are enjoyed by many may not suit the palate of others. Our customers really appreciate the efficiency of our kitchen and we work hard to ensure that the main dishes are ready to serve when the starters are finished. When this guest was diveterd by a very long telephone call, we were unable to serve the meat at its optimum and explained this at the time. We would have been very happy to delay the cooking of the steak had we been asked to do so .. we are very flexible. We pride ourselves on customer service and some time ago made a conscious decision to stop checking in on diners throughout the meal as it seems intrusive. Instead, we keep a vigilant eye on guests and quickly respond to them when beckoned. Anyone who knows us will tell you that our customers are our absolute priority, Naturally we would like to apologise to the guest in question for what he feels was a less than desitable experience .. and want to acknowledge and thank the 100s of guests who dine with us week in week out - we love seeing you all, cooking for you and treasure your custom.

I went to the Belchamp Half-Moon on the recommendation of my father, who said that it was an excellent pub - and I have never had a bad recommendation from him before. I went with my partner and after being seated and given our drinks we ordered. I had duck spring rolls as a starter and my other half had a baked camembert. The spring rolls were fairly substandard - very pastry and little duck, just like I would get from a supermarket. My mains I ordered the "chef's special" of rib-eye steak and breaded prawns. When the food arrived, I was disappointed to see that the Steak had a liberal coating of black pepper - I don't know why places season things like steak when there is pepper on the table - but also the steak was almost well-done when medium-rare had been specified. My chips were also under-done and very greasy when they arrived. When the food was collected (we were not asked during the meal how everything was) I pointed out the problems with mine and was told that the steak was overdone because I had made a phone call outside during the starters and so the steak was on for too long! I have never in my life been told, as a customer, that my food is badly done because I was responsible, but more to the point I don't know why the Steak was started when we hadn't even finished our starters - they only take six minutes! We did not receive any offer of discount at all on the meal, and for a £22 per head meal with no alcohol, I can say I will certainly not be returning as there are plenty of superior pubs around. Had I been offered an apology or a partial refund I would have been happy to give the pub a second chance but as it is I have no interest in giving business to somewhere who have such a low opinion of their customers.

I am delighted to say that this is my local & also I can walk to such a brilliant pub. The beer is always in excellent order (Cask Marque quality) and the guest ales change frequently. The food is something else. I now use the menu, quality of food and the prices as a benchmark to judge other pubs. There are few that compare and so when we want to eat out, we have the answer on our door step. My favourtie dish is pork medallions on rosti with fresh vegetables, but that said, Paul the chef does a very nice chicken satay, not to mention prawn curry. All I can say is join with many others and give it a try. I doubt you will be disappointed.

Having visited 'The Half Moon ' on a number of occasions now we are continually impressed with the consistency of the standards found - quality of meals , value for money , presentation ,and friendliness of staff are all excellent ,not to mention the pretty setting on the village green and standards of cleanliness throughout the pub and restaurant area. The variety of dishes on the menu never fails to impress , flavours are excellent and the food beautifully cooked. In summary a pub worth travelling (and returning to )for a high quality , well priced meal in a relaxed and pleasant environment. You will not be disappointed !
