Mother's day 2010 - Staff took 15 minutes to seat us in a prebooked, half-full restaurant. Eventually got our drinks and then our starters, which were very tasty but it then took forty-five minutes for our main courses to arrive. The advertised Apricot and cranberry stuffing to go with the turkey dinner was a Paxo special with no sign of either apricot or cranberry! We received one oval dish of mashed potato and one of brocoli and carrots between four men and three women, while the nearby table for two received the same amount! When we asked for more veg they were brought, grudgingly, with the addition of some mangetout. When asked by the manager if we'd like to order sweets, one of our party replied 'Yes, if they arrive a lot quicker than the 45 minutes we waitied for the main courses". The Manager was very abrupt and disputed the wait, which was confirmed by another of our party. When asked if he was calling the customer a liar, the Manager smirked........ . Hardly the best of customer relations. All in all the food was tasty enough but the extension in restaurant tables has obviously not been balanced by the facilities in the kitchen, even when the restaurant was half empty. Perhaps we now know WHY they had empty tables.... Our day was thoroughly spoiled, Mum was upset and, needless to say, we left no tips at all. If you don't mind a lengthy wait and a rude Manager, visit the Beresford Arms. If you think more of your Mother on Mother's Day - take her somewhere where customers are valued, and incidentally, where they use bleach in the toilets!!!

My friends and i decided to take a trip out as we do every week and as i came across in the news post leader The Beresford Arms was back under old management. We took a trip up to the pub to try it once more. It was quite busy, good atmosphere and we were welcomed by a Young Man Who really looked after us. Food Nicely Presented & Delicious Nice to see a Traditional Real Fire which everyone seemed to love. Would Highly Recommend.

I HAVE TO SAY MY VISIT TO THE BERESFORD ARMS WAS FANTASTIC. AFTER SEEING THE ADVERT THAT THE OLD FAMILY WERE BACK AT THE PUB I HAD TO RETURN. I VISITED THE PUB WITH TWO OTHER FRIENDS. WE WERE WELCOMED BY A YOUNG MAN WHO WAS VERY HELPFUL INDEED HE TOOK US TO A TABLE THAT WAS NEXT TO A WARM OPEN FIRE. WE DID NOT HAVE STARTERS I MYSELF DECIDED TO HAVE THE CREAM PEPPERD CHICKEN AS IT WAS A DISH WHEN I USED TO VISIT AND MY TWO FRIENDS HAD THE VERY POPULAR DUCK. THE MEAL WAS PRESENTED VERY WELL AND THE FOOD WAS BACK TO BEING FANTASTIC. WE WERE VERY PLEASED WITH THE SERVICE THE WARMTH AND ESPECIALY THE FOOD. I AM VERY PLEASED THE BERESFORD IS BACK TO ITS USUAL FOOD AND GREAT SERVICE AND WILL BE BACK. I RECOMEND THIS PUB TO ANYONE ...

my family and i decided to take a visit to the beresford arms in whalton. we have heard good things about the sunday lunches at the pub and also found out about the original familly and chef being back. we were warmly welcomed by the barman and the waitress they took our coats and offerd us a seat next to the open fire which was fantastic as the weather was very cold and we all needed warmed through. the menu was good had all the normal sunday roasts and other things such as duck, fish and scampi. my wife and i had the homemade mushroom soup which was very very nice my daughter had the shredded duck which looked beautfull i had a nibble and it was delicious. onto our mains i had lamb and the others had beef. it came with seperate veg which was very good as you could eat what veg you wanted. the staff were very helpul indeed asking what sauces we wanted and offering extra gravy free of charge so we obliged. they were very well presented with all the usual trimmings and a great homemade yorkshire pudding. we all got stuck into our food which was fantatsic all the plates were cleared it was a fantastic meal. my family were pleased with everything. cant wait to go back ... recomend to anyone

I am sorry to say my visit to the Beresford Arms wasn’t amazing. The restaurant had 4 other guests in at the time. We were seated by the bar person and I ordered a coke and a coffee. After waiting a few minutes at the table I had to prompt the bar person that I wanted to buy food. We ordered the Potato and Leek Soup and the Chicken and Stilton, with a portion of fries. My partner had her coke but I had to ask AGAIN for my coffee. The soup came minus the bread (which would take a few minutes), the bread came after a few moments and the soup at this time was a bit cooler. The main course came with a general morose and unenthusiastic response from the staff (you guessed it with out the side order of chips). They came out later at this point the music was sticking on the cd a combination of Lionel Ritchie and some old time swing jazz. The food was mediocre at its best the service was poor. I got the impression we were the unwelcome non villagers to this little click’y one pub community. We waited at the bar area to pay and leave, I did ask the bar man I wanted to pay. It was after a member of the public “a villager” found some one who was willing to process my transaction. Not the best £27.50 I have every spent.

A family and friends evening meal for 10: Pluses - Overall, very good food, although the orange and ginger creme brulee seemed devoid of ginger. Minuses - lousy tea and coffee; service conducted with mechanical efficiency but spectacularly morose demeanour from the two girls on duty. No welcome, no humour, no interest in diners.

My partner & I stayed at the Beresford Arms last week and thought it was just great! The accommodation was excellent, the meals in the bar every eveing were well presented, tasty and good value for money. The English breakfast was super. All the staff, with no exception, were friendly, pleasant and very helpful. I have recommended it to some friends already. Definately worth a return visit.Morpeth & surrounding countryside well worth visiting - a beautiful part of England.Thank you all very much.

After hearing many positive reports about the Beresford Arms, I booked a table for the day after my wifes birthday, for Sunday lunch. The booking was taken without any problems and was made for 1pm for 11 adults and 3 children. We arrived on time and were seated at a large table in what appeared to be a fairly new extension to the pub. It was very clean, smart and unlike a lot of pubs had plenty of room.Other than us, there were a couple of tables in but no more than 10 poeple. Drinks were ordered and menus were dished out.The menu was quite limited with 5 starters,6 mains(4 being roasts), a fish and a vegetarian option, and 4 desserts and a cheese option. Everyone except for one opted for beef and my father in law opted for the fish option. We waited for about 25 mins for our food to arrive and when it eventually did, boy did I feel let down. Being a chef myself with 16 years experience in some of the North East's best restaurants I would like to think I am a fair judge of whats good and whats bad. The beef and gravy were only lukewarm with the beef being what I guessed was rump, the roast potatoes & yorkshire puddings were stale and cold( they tasted as if they were made the night before and re-heated.The vegetables arrived and thankfully were hot and well seasoned and perfectly cooked. My father in law commented that the salmon was perfectly cooked.Desserts were good but again were slow in arriving. After being there for 2 hours for 2 courses we decided to skip coffee and take it at home. Service was unobtrusive but slow. Overall a very nice restaurant but let down by the slow service and the lack of a finer touch in the kitchen.6/10 Dont believe the hype!
