Coast & Country
In the towns of Lewes, Seaford and Newhaven, Peacehaven and Telscombe, and in our rural villages, many of which dot the South Downs National Park, there is plenty to see and do. Situated just an hour south of London by train, with direct links to Gatwick Airport and the Channel Port of Newhaven (daily sailings from Dieppe) and in between busy Brighton & Eastbourne, we offer a distinct and inspiring getaway for all ages.

We know that the coast and countryside around Lewes will offer you a great choice of places to visit, and towns and villages to explore. Stroll along the stunning chalk cliffs, along the coast and countryside landscapes of the South Downs National Park or discover our rich cultural heritage and enjoy the best of our local produce to make a relaxing break away from home. There is a range of quality assessed accommodation you can book and reserve online.

Coast
The coastal area around Lewes is some of the most beautiful in the country; it‚s where Œour blunt, bowheaded whale-backed Downs‚, as Rudyard Kipling described the South Downs, meets the sea along dramatic, channel-lashed cliffs and sprawling shingle beaches. The views from the Cuckmere Haven, Seaford Head and the Seven Sisters Country Park are some of the most photographed scenes in Britain.

Lewes District covers the area from Seaford in the east, following the coast through the port town of Newhaven and the seaside destinations of Peacehaven and Saltdean. Days down here are spent enjoying cliff-top walks, stopping in cute cafés, browsing antique and curio shops, and visiting local museums to brush up on the remarkable history of the Sussex coast that can trace its human history back 6,000 years. The cliffs and coastal flats are home to some of the most diverse birdlife in England.

Country
Lewes is an historic market town, and thus the satellite for a number of villages which traditionally sold their agricultural fare there, whether from the surrounding Downsland or in the Weald to the north. Lewes District may be an administrative entity created in the twentieth century, but Lewes‚ surrounding villages, such as Ditchling, Chailey, Plumpton, Barcombe, Glynde, Firle, Ringmer, Kingston, Falmer and Rodmell, form a natural and historical network.

The vicinity of Brighton notwithstanding, Lewes remains the service town for these villages, many of which have a rich and interesting past. There‚s plenty to do and see in the area, whether you‚re after a day at the opera, an afternoon at a family farm, a wide choice in top-of-the-range gastro pubs or a bracing walk or cycle on the South Downs.
