Just two miles North of the centre of the Sunderland stands the Fulwell windmill. Dominating the skyline, as it has done for nearly two hundred years, it rises above the community that it has served since being built in 1808. It worked through to the 1950’s when it closed and the inevitable deterioration started. Some restoration work was carried out during the 1970’s, but it was not until the City of Sunderland adopted the project that the full restoration work was completed. With help from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the European Regional Development Fund the mill was restored to its nineteenth century working form and now provides a popular venue for visitors and tourist to the area. It also provides an interesting and popular setting for educational visits and many special interest groups. In addition to the published opening times, special openings are available by arrangement.
