Racecourses in Taunton
The mansion, Orchard House, was built in the sixteenth century by Sir William Portman as the main seat of the Portman family. Orchard great field stretches across the grounds of Orchard House and is the site of Taunton Racecourse, established by the fifth Viscount Portman in 1927. Orchard House stood on the site of the back straight and the racecourse stables and was demolished in 1843. St. Michael's Church, is the only remaining building and the tower can be clearly seen when looking across the course from the stands.
