There is a certain mystery surrounding the date of the exact founding of Swindon Town F.C. Recent research suggests that the club was founded in 1879, possibly as Swindon A.F.C., before becoming Spartans and later merging with local rivals the Young Man's Friendly Society. In 1883 they became Swindon Town F.C. They turned professional in 1894 the team turned professional and joined the Southern League Division One. In 1920 they joined the Football League Third Division, where they played until 1963 when they won promotion and entered the Second Division. Unfortunately, it was to last only two years and Swindon was soon back in the Third Division. In 1969 however, the team reached probably its greatest heights, achieving promotion once again, but also beating Arsenal in the League Cup final. They managed to stay in the second tier for a little longer this time, finally dropping again in the mid seventies. Another successful period was the mid eighties when, after dropping down to Division Four, two successive promotions took them back to Division Two. Glenn Hoddle became manager in the early nineties and took the team to the Premier League in 1993. He left at the end of that season and they were relegated after one year in top flight.
