Aston Villa was founded in 1874 by members of the Villa Cross Wesleyan Chapel in Aston (now a district of Birmingham). It was formed by members of a cricket team who wanted something to occupy them during the winter months. They saw a football match in the local park and decided to form a team. They played there first game against a local Rugby team, playing one half under Rugby rules and one half under Football rules. They quickly became the dominant midlands team, on one occasion beating Small Heath Alliance by an incredible 22-0. Small Heath Alliance went on to become arch rivals Birmingham City! The club has a long and successful history, winning its first FA cup in 1887 and having won six by the time they won the cup again in 1920. The club were founder members of the Football League in 1888. Aston Villa has several League and Cup successes since then. The team plays at Villa Park, which has a capacity of 42,640, having previously played at Aston Park (1874–1876) and Perry Barr (1876–1897). After a relatively lean period in the clubs history it was sold in 2006 to Randy Lerner, owner of the American Football team the Cleveland Browns.
