Cricket is believed to have first reached the Glamorgan area towards the end of the 17th century, with the first record of a game in Glamorganshire being of a match in Swansea in 1780. Glamorgan County Cricket Club itself was formed in July 1888 at a meeting held at the Angel Hotel in Cardiff. Glamorgan is the only Welsh representative and in fact the only non-English county playing in the County Championships, having joined in 1921. Glamorgan's debut match at first class level was played at Cardiff Arms Park, better known as the former Welsh International Rugby stadium. Glamorgan won its first County Championship in 1948 and repeated the feat in 1969 and 1997. The 1948 title victory was attributed to the high fielding standards of the team led by their captain Wilf Wooller. The county has provided a number of players to the England team but some of the biggest names in the team's history come from overseas. The list includes Javed Miandad, Waqar Younis, Sourav Ganguly and Sir Viv Richards. The team has made attempts to develop its current ground Sophia Gardens, increasing its capacity to 17,500. However, the plan met with opposition from some of the local residents.
