Sunderland A.F.C. started life in 1879 as the Sunderland and District Teachers Association Football Club. In 1890 they were the first club to be elected to the Football League following its inauguration in 1888. Sunderland was one of the most successful English clubs in the early years of the Football League, having won five league titles prior to World War I. They added another league title in 1936. The club then won the FA Cup in 1937, a feat they repeated in 1973. They returned to the final in 1992, only to lose to Liverpool 2-0. Sunderland stayed in the top flight football for 68 years before finally being relegated in 1958. This was a record that was only broken in 1992 by Arsenal. Sunderland enjoyed two brief spells in the Premier League in the 1990's, the first of which lasted only one season. They then moved from their old stadium of 99 years, Roker Park, for the 49,000 seat Stadium of Light in 1997. This was quickly followed by another short lived stay in the top flight. The club was taken over in 2006 and Roy Keane was installed as manager. The club then gained promotion to the Premier League at the end of the 2006-07 season.
