Newbury Rugby Football Club was founded in 1928 by former St Barts Grammar School pupil Len Whittaker. Newbury RFC played its first game against Stoke RFC on 15th September 1928. Right from the early days, Newbury built a reputation for a high standard of play which attracted teams like Harlequins, Wasps, Northampton and Gloucester to its fixture list.

It was not until 1932 that the club found a permanent residence. The team moved to Pinchington Lane in 1952 and now resides at Monks Lane, Newbury. In 2006, the team celebrated its tenth anniversary at the Monks Lane site.

Since the early days the club has built a strong organisation that now fields about 18 teams in total. Its well developed youth section has the reputation of being one of the best youth set ups in the country. In recent years the first XV (made of professional and semi professional players) has gone from strength to strength, culminating in promotion to National Division One (the second tier of English Rugby) in 2005. Newbury has managed to consolidate its position in the second tier and is now enjoying its third season up at that level.
