Colchester United F.C. was formed in 1937, the same year that the local amateur club Colchester Town F.C. folded. The club briefly shared the ground Layer Road with the amateur club, but were never actually affiliated. The team count Ipswich Town and Southend United as their biggest rivals, although a rivalry with Wycombe Wanderers grew for a while following some crowd trouble at a match between the two in the 1985-86 season. The club played in various leagues, such as the Eastern Counties League and the Southern League before joining the Football League in 1950. After 42 years in the lower divisions, they lost their Football League status for two years before gaining promotion back to the League. In those two years they managed a non-League double, winning the Conference title and the Football Trophy. The team again spent a number of years in the lower division of the Football League before wining promotion to the Championship as League One champions in 2005-06. This was followed by the teams highest ever league position 10th place in the Championship (the second tier of English football). The team still plays at Layer Road, although there are plans for a new stadium at Cuckoo Farm.
