Famously immortalised as the place where "the mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea", Newcastle is a breathtakingly beautiful town. Situated on the coast of the Irish Sea, with its harbour, sandy beach and award-winning promenade overlooked by the forested slopes and towering, rugged outlines of the Mournes, Newcastle has long been one of the country's favourite resorts. There's plenty of fun for children at the amusement arcades, boating lake, putting green and open-air swimming pool, and there are sporting opportunities to suit everyone. The Royal County Down Golf Club - adjacent to the magnificent Slieve Donard Hotel - is among the world's best-loved championship courses. Amateurs might prefer to take advantage of the golf driving range at Donard Park, which also provides a number of sports pitches. Other activities enjoyed at Newcastle include fishing, tennis, bowls, horse-riding, water sports, cycling, hill-walking and mountain-climbing. Walkers are spoilt for choice around here, with miles of routes leading through dramatic natural landscapes. The Mourne Coastal Footpath is deservedly popular and Tollymore Forest Park, offering a variety of trails through awe-inspiring scenery, is one of Northern Ireland's leading attractions. Flowing through it is the Shimna river, complete with 200-year-old stone bridges.
