Fifteen miles northeast of Newcastle, on the Northumberland coast, lies Newbiggin-by-the-sea. The first recorded charter of the village dates back to 1204 when, on the eve of the Feast of Bartholomew, it was granted a market to be held weekly and an eight day fayre to start on the eve of the Feast. A home and fishing boat were linked to the monks of Newminster Abbery during the twelfth century and by the fourteenth century, Newbiggin had become an important maritime centre which was called upon for support by Edward II in 1336 in his campaign against the Scots. At one time a major port for shipping grain, Newbiggin is thought to have been the third most important east coast port after London and Hull and thrived as a fishing village in the nineteenth century. By the late 1800’s, Newbiggin had become a fashionable beach resort with many prominent Northumberland families holding summer residence. In 1908 a colliery was sunk which, in its peak during the 1940’s, produced 470,000 tons of coal. The colliery closed in 1967. A pier and promenade with bandstand were built during the late 1920’s and early thirties which have been subject to recent renovation and efforts to rejuvenate the town.
