Forest Hill is a pleasant south-London suburb situated between Dulwich and Sydenham. The "forest" part of the name is thought to refer to Sydenham Hill Wood and Dulwich Woods, which were originally part of the Great North Wood, now largely vanished. The district remains very hilly, affording spectacular views over London (especially at night) and Kent. Forest Hill has in recent years become increasingly attractive to home-buyers. Due to plans to extend the East London line into the area, it has received substantial investment, and a variety of new restaurants and other amenities have opened. The refurbished Dartmouth Arms, beside Forest Hill station, is a widely acclaimed gastropub that also promotes the work of local artists. The pub is closely associated with the development of Forest Hill: the station was originally called Dartmouth Arms after the humble inn, which was forced to relocate to bigger, adjacent premises in 1866 when business started booming. The nearby Hob pub, meanwhile, is well-known on the stand-up comedy circuit. The most famous attraction in Forest Hill is the Horniman Museum, which includes an aquarium and huge displays of taxidermy and musical instruments. Its Grade II-listed gardens have won a Green Flag and many other accolades.
