Teesdale is one of the prettiest and most unspoiled areas in England's North Country, famous for its beautiful flowers and waterfalls. No visitor should miss High Force, England's largest waterfall, or the local beer brewed in the nearby hotel! There are many lovely walks and opportunities for pony trekking, fishing and cycling, especially around Middleton-in-Teesdale. The Teesdale Way and Pennine Way National Trails pass through Teesdale. Hamsterley Forest and The Otter Trust Reserve, near Bowes, are particularly ideal for families.

Barnard Castle, or "Barney", is the historic gateway to Teesdale, full of fascinating old shops and a wonderful centre for antique collectors. There are associations with Charles Dickens and Sir Walter Scott. In the town is the magnificent The Bowes Museum with internationally famous collections, including works by Goya, El Greco and Canaletto. There are beautiful gardens here, and at Eggleston Hall and ancient Raby Castle. Nearby Cockfield is the birthplace of Jeremiah Dixon, surveyor of the Mason-Dixon Line in North America.
