A former police station dating from 1850, where Charles Dickens was once a special constable, Colin's Bridewell opened its doors in 2003 and is now a thriving Liverpool restaurant. For a date with a difference, book an intimate dinner in one of the cells (don't worry, they don't lock you in). Start off with ham hock and duck liver terrine with homemade piccalilli, then try pan-friend place with bails of asparagus and minted crushed potatoes. To finish, tuck into vanilla and white chocolate mousse with syruped raspberries. During the summer there are regular barbecues in the courtyard, and Colin's Bridewell even offers culture with your cooking: as well as live music, there are occasional plays and poetry readings. All in all, an arresting experience.
