Racing began at Gosforth Park in 1882 when the estate ceased to be a private home. In 1994 it reverted to private ownership when Northern Racing took over from the PLC that was the previous owner.

Since 1994 in excess of £6 million has been spent on refurbishment. These include improvements to all enclosures, new boxes, new betting halls and, most recently, a major refurbishment to restore Brandling House, the Grade II 1760's Listed Building at the heart of the Premier Enclosure to its former glory.
