The earliest record of a cricket match in Derbyshire is from 1757 when Wirksworth played Sheffield at Chesterfield. Derbyshire County Club was formed in November 1870, playing its first match against Lancashire County Cricket Club in May 1871 at Old Trafford. The team played in the County Championship, although it was a fairly informal unofficial version where the national press decided on the champions and did not always agree on their choices! By the time the County Championship became official, after being constituted at a meeting at Lord's in 1889, Derbyshire had fallen from the first class ranks after a run of poor results the year before. The county did recover first class status soon afterwards in 1894, however, and rejoined the county championship for the 1895 season. Derbyshire has only won the County Championship once to date, winning the title in 1936. The team achieved its success through players like Denis Smith, Stan Worthington, Tom Mitchell, Bill Copson and the Pope Brothers, George and Alf. Unfortunately, since the war Derbyshire has seen more downs than ups and is currently playing in the second division of the County Championship; the championship having been split into two divisions in 2000.
