Essex County Cricket Club was originally founded in 1876 at Brentwood in Essex. It is believed that cricket reached the county of Essex in the 16th Century, and developed during the 17th century. The first definitive mention of cricket in connection with Essex comes with the controversial match up between Chingford and Edward Stead's XI. It is unknown whether the game actually took place in Essex itself, however it is known that the saga began with a game that Chingford refused to play to a conclusion after Edward Stead's XI had built up a significant advantage. This resulted in a legal battle where the judge ordered the finishing of the match so that all wagers could be settled. The game, which had started in 1724, finished in 1726! Essex County had a strong representative team in the late 18th century. The team then seems to have all but faded from existence for some time until later, in 1876, when Essex County Cricket Club was formed. The team was admitted to first class county level in 1894 and joined the County Championship. They have won the County Championship on six occasions but had to wait until 1979 for the first one. Essex has provided numerous England players over the years, including former captains Graham Gooch and Nasser Hussain.
