At some time around 1877 Alexander Birkin (later Sir Alexander Birkin) came back to Nottingham from Rugby School, where he was introduced to Rugby Football. On his return home he gathered some friends together and started the beginnings of the Nottingham Rugby Football Club, he was still only 16. His family later purchased some land at Ireland Avenue, Beeston; which became the club's home until 2006. For the first 75 years the ground at Beeston was renowned as something of a mud bath, it being part of the flood meadow of the River Trent. In 2006 the team began to play its home fixtures at Meadow Lane, home of Notts County Football Club, which holds 20,438 spectators. In 1904 V H Cartwright became Nottingham's first international player and eventually went on to captain England. Other notable England internationals include Dusty Hare, Rob Andrew and Brian Moore. The latter internationals coming from the 1980s, an era which may be considered as something of a 'heyday' for the club. The club now plays in National League Division One, having achieved promotion in 2004. The team is challenging for promotion, having already achieved a 7th place finish in 2007.
