Tottenham Hotspur F.C. was formed in 1882 as Hotspur F.C. by members of Hotspur Cricket Club. It is believed that the name Hotspur is associated with Sir Harry Hotspur the character from Shakespeare's 'King Henry IV – part one', who had lived locally. In 1884 the team changed to Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. The club is often known as 'Spurs'. The team joined the Football League 1908, but in 1901 became the only non-league side to win the FA Cup since the formation of the Football League. Spurs won their first Football League title in 1951. The team has enjoyed a great many successes over the years but did not become recognised as a big club until 1958, when Bill Nicholson took over as manager. Nicholson joined the club as an apprentice in 1936 and ended up as club president. During his time as manager the team won eight major trophies within 16 years. Tottenham has been in the Premier League since its formation, although it has sometimes been a rocky ride. The team moved to their current site at White Hart Lane in 1899 when the old ground, Northumberland Park, could not cope with the 14,000 fans who turned up for the clash with arch rivals Woolwich Arsenal.
