Like many of the older clubs in the Football League, Sheffield United was formed by a local cricket club as a way of keeping the team together during the winter months and helping the players stay fit. Founded in 1889, the team was one of the most successful teams in the early years of the Football League. 'The Blades', as they are known, captured the Football League title in 1897-98 and finished runners-up in 1896-97 and 1899-00. They also had tremendous success in the FA Cup. Sheffield United won the cup four times between 1899 and 1925, also finishing as beaten finalists in 1901 and later on in 1936. The club played all of its football in the top two tiers of English Football from 1892 until 1979, when probably the darkest period in the club's history began. Between 1979 and 1984 Sheffield reached their lowest ebb, including relegation to the Fourth Division for the only time in their history in 1981. The stay at the bottom was short-lived and the club has slowly recovered to something closer to it former glory since then, having returned to the top two divisions in recent years. The club anthem is 'The Greasy Chip Butty Song'.
