Traditionally the term shooting would have brought to mind a day spent out hunting some game or vermin armed with a good 12 bore shotgun. Today, it can still mean that! But there’s much more to shooting today besides the traditional day out hunting on the land. Despite successive moves to tighten of the laws of gun ownership it is still possible to join a rifle club. Organisations such as the National Rifle Association can help guide you through the complex process of becoming properly licensed to go shooting. Using a shotgun also involves stringent licensing regulations although it is easier to secure a shotgun licence than a firearms licence. Clay pigeon shooting gives a very real thrill and is taken very seriously indeed at a competitive level. There are hundreds of shooting clubs both large and small in Great Britain. Most offer a friendly welcome to newcomers and have hire and sale facilities for those without their own guns or ammunition. As usual with any sport carrying an element of danger, it is essential that anyone contemplating shooting as a sport does so under proper supervision at all times. You must also be quite sure you are complying fully with all the relevant firearms regulations, the penalties for not doing so can be quiet severe!
