The village of Exton is a small village situated in the picturesque rural county of Rutland. In 2001 the population of the village was just below 600. Exton (meaning 'Ox farm' was recorded in 1185 (as Exton Park) as being a 'wooded farm, enclosed for hunting deer'. At the time it was Rutland's largest park; covering 1,500 acres and with a herd of 500 deer. The avenue of trees leading to the Double Lodge Gatehouses at the entrance to Exton Park is still known today as the "Queen of Bohemia's Ride". This relates to the fact that the former owner Sir John Harrington was charged with looking after King James First's daughter, who later married the Elector Palatine to become Queen of Bohemia. In addition to the main village as it is known today, there were several cottages near the Church known as Little Exton. In 1860, however, they were demolished when the then Earl wished to clear the park. Accommodation available for visitors to Exton includes the Fox and Hounds, a former coaching inn which has possibly the largest and prettiest walled garden in the county. There is also the Barnsdale Lodge Hotel, with 44 rooms and situated on the North Shore of Rutland Water.
